Hunt is giving the 48 and 60 Limitless an upgrade that we are really looking forward to. As RBA readers would know, we compared the Hunt 44 UD Carbon Spoke Disc vs the Cadex 42 not that long ago and came away impressed with both, but the Hunt offers value and performance.
Carbon-spoked wheels are nothing new. German-made Lightweight wheels with their bonded carbon spokes have been a top choice for those with deep pockets since the early 2000s. Bonded carbon-spoked wheels have remained rare, owing not only to their cost of construction but more so to their complexity of repair compared to steel spokes.
However, those barriers have come down. What these wheels bring is a new age of carbon-spoke design and construction that offer all the performance advantages with nearly none of the disadvantages. They are installed and function like regular steel spokes and nipples, but give you the advantage of carbon construction, think steel bike frame vs carbon frame. From our testing, we have had zero problems with the Hunt UD carbon spokes with thousands of miles on the 44’s.
The 48 and 60 Limitless are both tubeless-ready and have a hooked bead. As we have written about many times, having the hook is only beneficial if you are looking to run non-tubeless tires.
The two wheelsets are the newest additions to the HUNT Limitless range, developed to meet the technical requirements of our supported road racing teams and now available for all riders. By introducing UD Carbon Spokes to our class-leading Limitless aerodynamic rim profiles, the result is a riding experience like no other. Utilizing our Sprint SLC hubset, the wheels are designed to provide complete, all-around performance: superior aerodynamic efficiency and crosswind stability, with added responsiveness and lower system weight.
Debuted in 2019, HUNT integrated the properties of aerodynamics and lightweight by harnessing the company’s proprietary and patented Limitless Technology and applying the shape and construction method to multiple profiles designed for road and gravel disciplines. Limitless Technology, developed by in-house HUNT engineers, utilizes a co-molded low-density polymer (density of 0.7g/cm3 vs. carbon fiber pre-preg of 1.6g/cm3) in the outer rim construction to achieve an extra-wide profile (optimized for modern wide tires) while keeping the overall rim weight low.
The result is a supremely aerodynamic wheel with stable, predictable handling characteristics, especially in turbulent crosswind scenarios. Paraphrasing feedback from our supported riders, Limitless wheels feel fast like a much deeper wheel in terms of all-out speed, but handle like a much shallower wheel, making them an ideal option for fast, chaotic racing in changing wind conditions.
HUNT first launched UD Carbon Spoke wheelsets in late 2019, utilizing the now-proven TaperLock carbon spoke technology. The TaperLock system offers riders fully serviceable carbon-spoked wheels that can be trued like any other. With significant increases in lateral responsiveness (see testing info), they have been engineered to provide a stiffness-to-weight ratio previously unseen on serviceable wheels.

Both the 48 and 60 Limitless rim profiles were designed from the ground up, to yield the lowest aerodynamic drag with the smoothest steering moment. We chose to utilize these two ground-breaking rim profiles in the development of the Limitless UD Carbon Spoke Disc wheels to further bring revolutionary products to our riders with lower weight and increased responsiveness, relative to their steel spoke counterparts.
We’ve wind tunnel tested our new 48 and 60 Limitless UD Carbon Spoke Disc wheelsets against our original steel spoke version, as well as their relevant competitive set. Compared to their steel spoke counterparts, both the 48 and 60 Limitless UD Carbon Spoke Disc wheelsets perform very similarly (within the margin of error for standardized wind tunnel testing), suggesting there is no material aerodynamic penalty associated with the larger diameter UD Carbon Spokes.
