Electric boat companies are attracting large amounts of investment from companies and venture capitalists.

I am a sailor. One of the pleasures of making wind a power source on water is quietness. My sailors always refer to petrol or diesel-powered boats as "smelly pots." They were very noisy, leaving a cloud of dirty air behind them. On the other hand, electric boats are quiet and pollution-free.

As the transportation world shifts to batteries and electric motors, interest in electric boats is increasing. Just this week, General Motors agreed to invest $150 million in Pure Watercraft, a manufacturer of outboard motors. According to CNBC, GM's investment will be partly in cash and partly in kind. The two companies told CNBC that General Motors will become a component supplier for the new product co-developer Pure Watercraft, and will provide engineering, design and manufacturing expertise to help the startup build a new factory. CEO Andy Rebele said that the new partnership with General Motors should help the Pure team solve supply chain issues as the company grows.

According to data from the National Marine Manufacturers Association, the outboard engine market reached US$3.4 billion last year, putting an end to nine years of market growth. "Since World War II, the boating market is growing at an unprecedented rate," Rebele said. "During the pandemic, people want to do things with their families, using their pods. Going to sea is one of the most ideal activities."

General Motors is also paying attention to this growing market. In a LinkedIn blog post in October, CEO Mary Barra wrote: “We are providing a hardware platform to help everyone ride electric vehicles—even beyond our own cars. Our Ultium battery platform and HYDROTEC fuel cell platform enable It is possible for us to make airplanes, trains, cars and even ships into zero-emission products."

Pure Watercraft sells outboard engines and waterproof battery packs. Up to 10 battery packs can be connected together for maximum range. The company also cooperates with a number of boat manufacturers to sell ready-to-use electric boats of different shapes and sizes. One is the RIB Classic Deluxe 380 co-built with Highfield Boats (pictured above). It was completed at a price of $29,000 and is ready for launch.

If you think this is a lot of money, then you haven't set a price for a new ship recently. You haven't recently bought gasoline at a shipyard or spent money to winter out an outboard engine. The cost of maintaining an electric boat is much lower than that of a boat using traditional gasoline or diesel engines, just as owning an electric car is cheaper than owning a traditional car.

Pure Watercraft has been pursuing electric outboard motors for ten years. Arc is a start-up company co-founded by former SpaceX engineer Ryan Cook, who plans to introduce aviation technology into the shipbuilding industry. Electric propulsion is the core of the plan. According to TechCrunch, the company is focusing on the design and development of dedicated hulls and battery packs. Its first ship, Arc One, had a 24-foot aluminum hull and an electric power system that produced 475 horsepower. It is equipped with a 200 kWh battery, which can provide up to 5 hours of boating power on a single charge.

Arc is focused on delivering Arc One, a ski boat priced at $300,000. It plans to build 25 ships first, but Arc has bigger plans. Once it becomes a manufacturer of high-tech electric boats, it will provide other designs. The company has attracted investment from celebrities such as Will Smith, Kevin Durant, and Sean "Diddy" Combs. The latest round of financing was led by former Tesla executive and current Eclipse Ventures partner Greg Reichow.

From locomotives to construction equipment, from airplanes to ships, to cars and trucks, the electrification of transportation is happening, and this transition is accelerating almost every day. Dodge is exiting the Hellcat business. Electric pickups come from the Detroit Big Three. Now, people's interest in electric boats is heating up.

By 2030, the transformation will be nearly complete, and those who cannot see the future will be left behind. This is good news for electrification enthusiasts. Despite opponents and nonsense, it is happening, and faster than we thought.
