BEVERLY HILLS, CA — A man was found unresponsive in a van after a standoff that shut down a bustling Beverly Hills intersection on Saturday, authorities said.

Around 6:08 p.m., police received multiple calls that a van was causing "a traffic hazard" in the area of Wilshire Boulevard and Linden Drive, the Beverly Hills Police Department said in a statement.

Officers attempted to communicate the driver but he drove eastbound on Wilshire Boulevard, prompting a brief pursuit.

The motorist then drove through a red light at the intersection of Wilshire Boulevard and Rodeo Drive before coming to an abrupt stop within the intersection, police said.

Officials said the driver exited the van momentarily, but quickly climbed back into the van after noticing police units behind him. The man then "made clear attempts to secrete himself inside the van by placing aluminum foil and other items on the windows," police said.

For hours, police and a SWAT unit made several unsuccessful attempts to contact the man. A drone was also used during the standoff.

"After a long unsuccessful period to communicate, SWAT officers entered the van and located an unresponsive lone male," police said.

Paramedics attempted to treat the unresponsive man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of death was unknown as of Sunday morning and police said an investigation was ongoing.
