Help close Windows 10 background applications here

I don't know there are so many things in Windows 10 that I should turn off. CNET gave me a list.

The worst part is that every application can run in the background, even if you don't open it. Apps you don’t even care about may install updates and send you notifications, among other actions, taking up your bandwidth and slowing down your computer. To turn it off, type "background applications" in the Windows search bar at the bottom left of the screen. When it appears, switch the main switch to the off position.

Next on the list: Did you know that you have a Microsoft ID associated with your account that will be distributed to marketers? If it bothers you, type "privacy settings" in the Windows search bar. When it appears, switch the switch to off, where it says "Let the app use the advertising ID to make you more interested in advertising."

For more information on these tips, search for the phrase "8 bad default Windows 10 settings and how to change them."

One of my favorite techniques for repairing a problematic computer is "System Restore." So when Windows stopped creating restore points on my machine, I was angry.

System restore brings you back to the era when everything was normal. (Mac is equivalent to "Time Machine".) To set up in Windows, type "create restore point" in the search box at the bottom left of the screen. Then click "Configure". When I did this, I found that Windows did not allocate any storage space for the restore point. No wonder I didn't find it. I quickly moved the slider from 0 to 1.5 GB. To test it, I uninstalled a program and typed "create restore point" in the Windows search box to enter "System Restore". everything is normal.

To be extra careful, you may want to let Windows automatically create a restore point every time you restart. In this way, if there is a problem today, you can revert to yesterday. Please refer to "How to make Windows automatically create a system restore point at startup" on HowtoGeek.com. This article has a link to a free, automated tool, which is easy.

I used to be in a large room full of commercial laser cutting machines. It was at a trade show and they were carving amazing artworks, machinery and jewelry. Even more surprising is that you can get the home version of this device for about the cost of a computer.

Makeblock's xTool M1 is a desktop cutting machine and engraving machine, which will be available in March. The price at the time of shipment is US$1,299, but the early bird is priced at US$799. The company raised $1 million in the first five days of the crowdfunding website Kickstarter, and the value of pre-orders since then exceeded $1.6 million.

There are several videos on the xTool site. You can watch the process of making snowflake coasters, earrings and rubber stamps. Other possibilities include dog collars, rings, and wooden rolling pins that make patterns on the dough. It can engrave anything from aluminum to vinyl. You might want to start a business and put Fido's name on his collar. But if there are friends who can help you learn how to operate the machine, that would be great.

Facebook.com/townhall lists your local, state, and country representatives. I clicked on our ambassador to the United Nations. Others made critical comments under the ambassador’s ebullient statement.

Most people follow hundreds of celebrities, journalists, etc. on Twitter. I only pay attention to eight. But even if there are eight, I don't look at them often. They are buried on the Twitter homepage.

This is the solution. To see a list of people you follow, go to Twitter.com and click on the word "Profile" or, if you are using a mobile phone, click on your account icon and then click on "Profile". Next click "Follow" and click on a name to view their recent posts. If you haven't followed anyone, type a name in the search bar on Twitter.com and click "Follow".

A reader asked two questions. First: "How do I enter the Facebook Marketplace from my location in Charleston, South Carolina, and it’s only on my home desktop? I don’t have Facebook on my laptop."

The answer is, whether you are at home or in Timbuktu, as long as you log in, Facebook will know your location.

Question 2: How do you stop Facebook from sending you emails when your friend’s latest cat photo appears? On your computer, click the down arrow in the upper right corner of Facebook. Then click "Settings and Privacy". Now click "Settings", then "Notifications" and turn off anything you don't want.

If you want to understand how difficult it is to browse the Internet without a large technology company, try the free application of BigTechDetective.net. It will prevent any website from loading-if it uses something from a large tech company.

The app is a bit technical to use, so let's get to the point. Without Google, Facebook, Amazon and Microsoft, browsing the web is almost impossible. On most sites, you will receive a message stating that the page has been locked because it uses resources from one of the companies.
